RS-232
A simple serial electrical interface usually intended for point-to-point connections.

One device talks directly to another over a relatively short cable.
In normal English
RS-232 is common on older instruments, service ports and simple serial devices but is less suitable than RS-485 for long industrial multi-device networks.
Why would I use it?
Use it for direct serial links where both devices specifically provide RS-232.
